My Experience: Myron Mays

I’m far from a bible scholar. As a matter of fact I don’t have a lot of bible scriptures memorized. However, over my life time, I’ve heard various versions of Proverbs 18:16, where it says “A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.” I’ve always had a good sense of what that meant. However, I never thought of what I do as a gift or talent. I just get up every day and go to work. However, as I become older, wiser and more focused in my goals and career. That scripture really makes more and more sense to me

I just became involved with Grooming Greatness just literally days ago, one month ago pretty much. Pastor Johnson approached Roby Williams, who is my teammate at Black Business Association about this program he started. Roby immediately got involved. In addition to his involvement, he also got Ricky Tucker, our other teammate and myself involved as well. He has always had a knack for volunteering us for stuff.

When we all sat down, I volunteered to assist them with their social media needs, website, Facebook, Twitter, etc. It just so happens to be something that I am fairly good at. Not to mention, it also ended up being the thing that Roby volunteered me for.

Just last week, Pastor Johnson invited us to lunch at his office. We were to discuss ways we can grow the program and expand its reach. I came prepared to explain how my social media talents could be even more helpful. Amazingly enough, it ended up being much more than me just sharing my talents. It became more of a confirmation of what I believe my purpose in life is…and that is to help change lives for the better through the skills that I have learned.

As I sat there, I could not help but to think of how this scene may have appeared to someone on the outside looking through the window. Would they be able to tell that something special was happening? I don’t know, but I can tell you exactly how it felt. It felt good. I felt that what was taking place at that table was something that I was supposed to be a part of. That meeting made me feel good about who I was and what I was doing.

One of the first things that came to mind was Proverbs 18:16.A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.”  Now you might ask, why would that scripture fit that situation?

Fair question…I mean, the guys at the table weren’t world renowned figures. They weren’t world leaders. I mean…two of them were my coworkers and I see them every day. It was just a group of men in Memphis who wanted to see change in their neighborhoods. But, this was much more than just a group of guys sitting down eating catfish for lunch.

This was seven Black men sitting at that table…fellowshipping. Not only wanting to “see” change in their neighborhood, but willing to “be” change as well. And in my book, that qualified everybody at that table as GREAT men…and to think, little ole Myron Mays was there because he just so happens to be good at social media. But it was much more than that. A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.”  Now it all makes perfect sense now doesn’t it?

This past Saturday, I got the opportunity to attend the actual session and see what the whole process was all about. I was even asked to give an impromptu talk about some of the things I was volunteering for as well as some of the ideas that I previously shared at the lunch meeting.

And once again, I found myself in the company of more GREAT men. Who not only wanted to see change in their community, but was willing to be change as well. And here I was once again, lending my talents, sharing my knowledge and helping to change someone’s life for the better…and ultimately living within my purpose.

Everyone has a purpose in life and this experience has helped me to understand mine just a little bit more. Perhaps your purpose is different than mine. Perhaps your skillset is different. However, when you find yourself being placed in a situation as a result of that skillset, pay close attention. You just never know when your greatness is being groomed.
